What is MPEG Video Format?

What is MPEG video format? MPEG video format is a file format developed by the group of MPEG which is short form Moving Pictures Expert Group. MPEG video format is an international compression standard for moving images and used to create VCD, SVCD, DVD discs. Currently, there are three compression standards of MPEG - MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4. Moreover, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 is being developed. MPEG video file formats have the .mpg and .dat extension while MPEG audio files generally have the extension .mp1, .mp2, .mp3.

Development of MPEG Video Format

MPEG video format was developed by MPEG, the working group of ISO/IEC. The first official MPEG meeting was in 1988 and as of 2008 the group has grown exponentially to include over 380 members every meeting. The related standards from MPEG include MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-3, MPEG-4,MPEG-7 and MPEG-21. MPEG-1 compression format was developed by MPEG group in 1993 while MPEG-2 in 1995 used by DVD-ROM.MPEG-3 was designed for HDTV and MPEG-4 was standardized in 1998 in the ISO/IEC document 14496. MPEG-7 provides a tool set for completely describing multimedia content while MPEG-21 describes a standard that defines the description of content and also processes for accessing, searching, storing and protecting the copyrights of content.

The major advantage of MPEG video format compared to other video and audio coding formats is that MPEG video file formats are much smaller for the same quality. This is because MPEG video format uses very sophisticated compression techniques. MPEG video format adopted lossy compression algorithms, which removes the redundancy between subsequent images and previous images while preserves most similar parts in order to reduce redundancy data. MPEG video format achieves its high compression rate by storing only the changes from one frame to another, instead of each entire frame. The video information is then encoded using a technique called Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT).
