What is 3GP Video Format?

What is 3GP video format? 3GP video format is a multimedia container format defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project(3GPP) and used on mobile phones to store media including audio and video, usually with a .3gp extension. 3GP video format is a simplified version of the MP4 container format, designed to decrease storage and bandwidth requirements in order to accommodate mobile phones. There are two different standards for 3GP video file formats: 3GPP for GSM-based phones (.3GP) and 3GPP2 for CDMA-based phones (.3G2).

Development of 3GP Video Format

3GP video format was developed by a group of companies and standards organizations from Europe, North America, and Asia called the 3rd Generation Partnership Project(3GPP). The purpose was to develop a mobile video standard compatible with 3G GSM mobile phone systems. Nowadays 3GP video format has become the new worldwide standard for the creation, delivery and playback of multimedia over 3rd generation, high-speed wireless networks. 3GP video file formats are used by quite a number of mobile phones as the standard format for recording video clips.

As for the actual video inside, it is generally MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263 or H.264. AMR or AAC audio used with 3GP video format. Frame rates for most mobile devices are Limited to 15fps.
